À notre époque vacille l’idée que nous avons de la réalité. Il n’y a plus de certitude concernant ce concept, malmené par la modernité.
Le réel est devenu une notion floue, que l’on peut s’approprier librement, et imposer aux autres. Simple question d’habileté technologique, et communicationnelle.
Il n’y a rien d’étonnant à cela, car il n’existe pas – il n’a d’ailleurs jamais existé - sous une forme robuste, bien définie. Il est fluide, extensible à loisir, a peu de consistance. Les seules réalités tangibles restent celles de nos corps de mortels, et des écosystèmes qui les maintiennent en vie.
Au-delà, il y a autant de réels qu’il existe de perceptions du monde, et d’identités. S’il subsiste une idée vague d’un sens commun, que nous partagerions – réalité imposée par des puissances manipulatrices – nous assistons, depuis le début de l’ère numérique, à son éclatement, son atomisation accélérée.
C’est là une opportunité pour les artistes, intellectuels, scientifiques et geeks, dont les activités trouvent de nouveaux terrains. Le réel, qui n’a pratiquement plus de densité, peut se modeler comme une glaise informe, soumise aux désirs d’un artisan fou.
Il adopte une infinité de formes, s’accorde à toutes les imaginations. L’illusion devient aussi réelle que l’agencement, ultra complexe et trompeur, des faits que nous prenons pour références.
L’Anthropocène a ceci de particulier qu’elle nous promet une inventivité sans borne en ce qui concerne la fabrique de la réalité.
Les plus favorisés d’entre nous peuvent acquérir les outils, les savoir-faire, leur permettant d’élaborer leurs réels personnels. Les limites, les frontières sont en voies d’abolition.
Inutile de s’accrocher à l’idée qu’il existe une seule réalité. Telle une eau instable, celle-ci s’écoule entre nos doigts, en s’adaptant aux contenants capables de la retenir.
Toute représentation dite « réaliste » est donc à regarder d’un œil méfiant.
Puisque le siècle est à la promotion d’une multitude de réalités alternatives, autant faire de la sienne un projet désirable, inventif, poétique…
